“Urban Landscape,” acrylic on canvas, 50 x 87 cm.

A mysterious urban landscape with strong contrasts, created by layering thin coats of transparent acrylic. Absence of texture (apart from the canvas grain), no impasto, a profusion of subtleties and glazes, traces of graphic design in the transparencies, even in the dark tones. This work is executed using a watercolor technique applied to acrylic: the light emanates from the white of the canvas.

The main subject of this work remains mysterious, even to me… A port, an industrial site, a place on fire… Who knows? Delicate blues and greens, strong contrasts of light and shadow (a fire? clouds illuminated by the sunset?).

The main colors are transparent: indigo, blue, petroleum blue, brown, green, greyish-blue, transparent dark brown, yellow, and orange… The style is modern, contemporary, semi-abstract. The representation is slightly disrupted, enough to raise questions. It raises more questions than it answers. Concrete elements can be interpreted: fire or clouds, water or road, port or oil platform, urban landscape. But their association doesn’t work according to conventional criteria. Reality is subtly deconstructed. Meaning isn’t asserted: is it an ordinary urban scene or an industrial accident?

This work can be hung in any position, and each time, a different meaning emerges. Here, the urban becomes nature; there, it’s the other way around. Presented vertically, this painting speaks to us of something else. Only the reference to flames remains. Why does it remain? An unfathomable mystery to which no answer should be given. Art allows us to create worlds.
